Your AI Is Already Making ESG Decisions. You Just Haven’t Realised It Yet.

Every meaningful AI decision is already an ESG decision.

Every time AI influences people, processes or business outcomes, it also influences fairness, transparency, accountability and trust.

Whether organisations realise it or not, AI has quietly become one of the biggest ESG topics of our time.

When most leaders hear ESG, they still think of carbon emissions, sustainability reports and regulatory compliance, and that’s it.

Those conversations remain important but the rapid adoption of AI has introduced an entirely new set of leadership questions: should AI screen job candidates; could it help evaluate employee performance; should it recommend promotions; what about AI deciding who receives a loan or insurance coverage?

These are no longer technology decisions but are strategic ones, and they sit at the very heart of ESG.

One of the biggest misconceptions about artificial intelligence is that algorithms make objective decisions. They don’t.

AI learns from historical data, existing processes and the decisions organisations have already made. If those decisions contain bias, inconsistency or poor judgement for example, AI doesn’t remove them but even amplifies them – faster and often with greater confidence than any human ever could.

Technology rarely creates organisational culture but it definitely exposes it, which means every AI system becomes a reflection of the organisation that built, trained and adopted it.

For years, governance meant policies, controls, audits and compliance, and yes, those remain essential.

But AI has expanded the conversation: who decides which decisions AI is allowed to make; who reviews those decisions; who is accountable when the algorithm gets it wrong; how do we ensure that efficiency never comes at the expense of fairness, and perhaps the most uncomfortable question of all: who takes responsibility when nobody can explain why AI made a particular recommendation?

Recently, I discussed this topic with Sasho Boshevski, Managing Director of ESG Talent.

So I asked him one simple question:

Artificial intelligence will transform how organisations operate.

That much is certain.

What remains uncertain is whether it will strengthen the principles organisations claim to stand for or expose where those principles never truly existed.

Every company is already teaching AI how decisions are made. The real question is:
